What the federal file says about orthopedic surgeons
25,173 orthopedic surgeons are enrolled in Medicare in the CMS file dated Aug 18, 2026, counted once each by NPI, across 2 CMS specialties: orthopedic surgery and hand surgery. The most are in California (2,566), Texas (1,718) and Florida (1,619). 9.4% are women, and the median year of medical school graduation is 2004. 14% report telehealth services.
The AAMC count is lower: it counts only physicians working more than 20 hours a week who are not retired or in training. DataCaptive, Medicoleads, ReachStream and LakeB2B print US counts above both. Ask each seller what one row is before you pay: a physician, a contact at a practice, or an address.
Email coverage is the part to check hardest, ours included. We have not run an email test on orthopedic surgeons yet; our one test so far, on Sep 10, 2026, verified 55 of 400 cardiologists.

Renting the specialty society's list
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has no list-rental page we could find. Its privacy policy says Annual Meeting registrants' names and postal addresses are sold to exhibitors, and that it may license names and addresses from its member database for mail relevant to orthopaedic surgery. How to choose an orthopedic surgeon list
Decide who counts as an orthopedic surgeon. Our file combines the CMS orthopedic surgery and hand surgery specialties, 25,173 in all; the AAMC counted 19,419 active physicians in orthopedic surgery. Four sellers print US counts above 25,173 (ReachStream, DataCaptive, Medicoleads and LakeB2B), so ask what they include.
If you sell devices or implants, check the practice field. In the CMS file, 51% of orthopedic surgeons bill from more than one location, so the practice name and phone tell your rep which office to call.
